Together, 家训 refers to traditional moral guidelines, ethical principles, and behavioral expectations passed down within a family across generations. These precepts often emphasize virtues like filial piety, honesty, diligence, humility, and respect for elders.

Historically, prominent families in China compiled formal 家训 texts — such as the famous Zhu Xi’s Family Instructions — to educate children and preserve family values. Today, while less formalized, the concept remains culturally significant: parents may still convey unwritten 家训 through stories, proverbs, daily reminders, or rituals. It reflects Confucian ideals of self-cultivation rooted in familial responsibility and intergenerational continuity.
