Yùjù (Henan opera) is one of China’s major traditional operatic forms, originating in Henan Province in central China. The character 豫 (yù) is the official abbreviation for Henan Province—historically named after the ancient state of Yu—and 剧 (jù) means 'drama' or 'opera'. Together, they literally mean 'Henan drama', distinguishing it from other regional operas like Peking opera (Jīngjù) or Cantonese opera (Yuèjù). Yùjù is known for its vigorous singing style, expressive vocal techniques (especially high-pitched, nasal tones), and lively percussion accompaniment.

This art form is deeply rooted in rural life and folk culture, often featuring historical tales, moral stories, and local legends. It remains widely performed across Henan and among Henan diaspora communities, and is recognized as part of China’s national intangible cultural heritage. While modern adaptations exist, traditional yùjù emphasizes stylized movement, symbolic props, and distinctive facial makeup.
