‘Húrén’ is a historical Chinese term referring broadly to various non-Han ethnic groups from Central Asia, the steppes north of China, and parts of the Western Regions—such as the Xiongnu, Xianbei, Turks, and Sogdians—especially during the Han to Tang dynasties. The character 胡 (hú) originally denoted ‘non-Chinese’ or ‘barbarian’ peoples to the north and west, often carrying connotations of foreignness, nomadic lifestyle, or cultural difference; 人 (rén) simply means ‘person’ or ‘people’. Together, 胡人 functions as a collective noun meaning ‘northern/western non-Han peoples’.
