The term jǐng tián (well-field) refers to an ancient Chinese land distribution system from the Zhou Dynasty, in which land was divided into nine equal squares resembling the character 井 (‘well’), with eight outer plots farmed by individual families and the central plot cultivated collectively for the lord. The name comes directly from this visual layout: 井 means ‘well’ but here evokes the grid-like pattern of irrigation channels and boundaries, while 田 means ‘field’ or ‘farmland’—together they denote both the physical arrangement and the socio-economic institution.

This concept appears primarily in classical texts, historical discussions, and academic writing about early Chinese agrarian society. Though no longer practiced, 井田 remains culturally significant as a symbol of idealized communal land use and Confucian notions of fairness and order. It is rarely used in modern daily speech but may appear in history classes, scholarly articles, or political philosophy debates referencing traditional models of social equity.
